Nike released the Air Max 2090 in 2020 as a 30th-anniversary reinterpretation of the Air Max 90, combining that shoe's retained DNA — mudguards, cassette, and heel logo — with futuristic design elements. The Air unit was enlarged by 200% versus the Air Max 90, given a bigger visibility window, and paired with a looped heel pull tab. The upper uses new materials including translucent mesh panels and a cropped Swoosh logo for a sleeker look, while the outsole received additional flex grooves for reinforced traction. Early colorways, launched around Air Max Day (March 26, 2020), drew inspiration from future modes of transportation, echoing the original Air Max 90's Italian-sports-car aesthetic. Later releases included the Nike-designed Retro Futurism pack by Air Max Senior Creative Director Dylan Raasch, an Evolution of Icons edition, an Olympic Rings-themed colorway, and Neymar Jr. collaborations. It stands as, in Nike's own words, a tribute to the past and a step toward Nike's future of footwear innovation.
