About
Designed by Christian Tresser and released in 1997, the Nike Air Max 97 drew its inspiration from high-speed Japanese bullet trains as well as titanium metal frames on mountain bikes. The design incorporated a nearly full-length visible Air unit, a hidden lacing system, and three reflective lines made from Scotchlite material. The original colourway — the "Metallic Silver Bullet" — directly referenced the bullet train inspiration through its streamlined, all-silver aesthetic. At launch, the Air Max 97 retailed for $150, approximately $10 more expensive than its predecessor. The shoe found particular popularity in Italy, where it was re-released in 2007 for its 10th anniversary. Nike marked the shoe's 20th anniversary in 2017 with many new colourways and collaborations. The Air Max 97 remains one of the most recognisable Air Max silhouettes globally, with its full-length Air cushioning and Scotchlite reflective detailing making it one of the most visually distinctive running shoes ever produced.
