The New Balance 9060 arrived in 2022 as a deliberately distorted love letter to the brand's running heritage. Designed by New Balance's James Lee and Yue Wu, the project began in late 2019, just before the COVID-19 pandemic, and was developed remotely. Rather than reviving a single archive model, the 9060 borrows familiar components from across New Balance's catalogue and reinterprets them through a modern, expressive lens. It celebrates the technology of the 990 series while channelling the wavy lines of early-2000s runners like the 860. An exaggerated sole unit, sculpted overlays and an extended oversized "N" logo give it an unmistakable Y2K silhouette. The 9060 first reached the public through Joe Freshgoods' "Inside Voices" collaboration before the general-release "Mindful Grey" colourway followed in July 2022 at a $150 retail price. It quickly became one of the most in-demand lifestyle sneakers of the decade. Premium pig suede and a chunky midsole make it equal parts retro tribute and contemporary statement.
