About
The New Balance 2002 was originally developed in 2010 as a high-performance running shoe and the successor to the New Balance 2001. It drew design inspiration from the New Balance 1906 model and launched at $250 — a premium price point that initially kept consumer demand low. The shoe spent years as a niche favourite before New Balance Japan employee Tetsuya Shono championed a reissue, recognising the 2002's cult popularity in Japan and believing it could complement the 99X series by offering a different aesthetic. Reintroduced in 2020 as the 2002R on the shoe's tenth anniversary, it arrived with a Heritage Running positioning and found an entirely new audience. Collaborations with prominent designers rapidly elevated its cultural status, and the 2002R became one of the breakout silhouettes of the early 2020s. Its N-ERGY cushioning system and nubuck-and-mesh upper give it a distinctly technical look that bridges performance running and contemporary lifestyle dressing.
