The name derives from 1906 — the year New Balance was founded — placing the model within the brand's heritage 1000 series alongside the 990 and 2002R. The 1906R updates the original by replacing its sole with the unit from New Balance's 860v2, a running model known for stability and cushioning performance. The upper retains the original 1906's layered mesh construction with the NLOCK webbing system for midfoot lock-down, while visible cushioning pods and segmented midsole geometry define its technical aesthetic. N-ERGY gel technology is positioned across the sole for impact absorption. At $155, the 1906R entered the market as New Balance's answer to the early 2020s trend of performance-derived silhouettes crossing into lifestyle.
