About

The Vans Slip-On grew out of the company's original Authentic silhouette, stripped back further to eliminate laces entirely and create a shoe that could be pulled on and off in seconds. The checkerboard pattern now synonymous with the shoe has an origin story rooted in skate culture: Vans noticed skateboarders drawing the black-and-white grid pattern directly onto their shoes, and the company adopted it as an official design. The shoe reached a national audience in 1982 when actor Sean Penn wore checkerboard Vans Slip-Ons as character Jeff Spicoli in Fast Times at Ridgemont High — the exposure turned a regional California skate shoe into a nationwide cultural reference. The Slip-On's lack of laces made it a practical choice for skateboarders who needed a shoe they could get on and off quickly, and the canvas construction kept it lightweight and affordable. The checkerboard colourway in particular has been revisited in dozens of iterations, from Fast Times-anniversary editions to high-fashion collaborations, always returning to the same simple two-colour grid that skateboarders first drew by hand.
