About
The Van Doren Rubber Company was founded on March 16, 1966, by Paul Van Doren, his brother James, and Gordon C. Lee in Anaheim, California. By 1976, Vans released the Vans #36 — later known as the Old Skool — alongside its distinctive Side-stripe design, the same year the brand adopted its Off The Wall motto, a phrase borrowed from skateboarding slang for tricks performed in empty swimming pools. The Old Skool emerged directly from Vans' deepening roots in California skateboarding culture. The logo visible on Vans shoes was designed in the 1970s by Mark Van Doren, son of co-owner James Van Doren, when he was just 13 years old; it originated as a stencil he used to spray-paint onto his skateboards. In 2004, Vans merged with VF Corporation for $396 million, expanding its global reach. The Old Skool is now one of the most widely worn skate-derived silhouettes in India, popular across age groups for its clean low-top profile and unmistakable Side-stripe.
