About
The Nike Metcon 1 debuted in 2015 as Nike's first shoe engineered specifically for high-intensity functional fitness training, built to handle the mixed demands of CrossFit-style workouts: running, jumping, rope climbing, and heavy weightlifting in a single session. It was worn early on by elite CrossFit competitors including Josh Bridges, Lauren Fisher, Mat Fraser, and Sara Sigmundsdottir. Nike gave the shoe a reinforced heel for stability during loaded lifts like squats and deadlifts, while the forefoot stayed flexible enough for burpees and box jumps. The upper paired abrasion-resistant mesh with Nike's Flywire cable technology, described as a system of filaments that functions like the cables on a suspension bridge, delivering structural support without added bulk. It carried a 4mm heel-to-toe drop. The name Metcon is drawn from 'metabolic conditioning,' the training concept at the core of CrossFit-style workouts. That same year, the shoe became entangled in a sponsorship conflict: Nike was barred from the CrossFit Games because of Reebok's official partnership with the competition. Despite the controversy, the Metcon 1 launched what has grown into a decade-plus training franchise. Nike marked ten years of the line with the Metcon 10 in 2025.
