About
The Nike Free was introduced in 2005 after Nike representatives observed the brand's sponsored track athletes training barefoot on grass — a practice coaches used to build foot strength and improve natural running mechanics. The observation prompted Nike to ask whether a shoe could be engineered that replicated the biomechanical benefits of barefoot running while still providing protection. The result was the Nike Free, built around a deeply grooved, segmented outsole that allows the sole to flex in multiple directions simultaneously, mimicking the way a bare foot moves on varied terrain. Nike developed a numbering system to communicate the cushioning level of each Free variant: the scale runs from 0 (closest to barefoot) to 10 (a standard running shoe), with models like the Free 3.0 and Free 5.0 offering different points on that spectrum. The Free represented a significant philosophical shift in running shoe design and fuelled the broader minimalist footwear movement of the late 2000s and early 2010s, influencing competitors to release their own barefoot-inspired alternatives. The Free Run 5.0 remains the core lifestyle expression of the line.
