About
The Nike Air Trainer 1 is widely regarded as the first-ever cross-training shoe, released in 1987 and designed by Tinker Hatfield. The idea came after Hatfield noticed gym-goers carrying multiple pairs of shoes, one for running and another for lifting, and set out to build a single shoe capable of handling running, basketball, weightlifting and racquetball alike. Originally launched as the Air Trainer Hi, it sat with more heel lift than a basketball shoe but less than a runner, added a lateral outrigger for stability, and featured its signature midfoot strap for an adjustable, locked-down fit. Tennis star John McEnroe was tied to the shoe as early as 1985 and famously debuted a prototype in 1986 without permission, fitting the model's rebellious image. It later became synonymous with Bo Jackson through Nike's "Bo Knows" advertising campaign, cementing its place in sneaker history. Defined by its bold "Chlorophyll" colourway and versatile design, the Air Trainer 1 bridged sport and style and remains a celebrated reissue today.
