About
The Nike Air Penny 2 first launched in 1996 as Penny Hardaway's second signature basketball shoe, debuting during the 1996-97 NBA season. The shoe was built to support Hardaway's playing style during his time with the Orlando Magic and is widely regarded as a testament to ultra-creative mid-90s design. Its construction pairs a leather and nubuck upper with mesh panels and suede eyestays, complemented by dual pull tabs at the collar and tongue. A white Phylon midsole sits beneath the foot, with a rubber outsole providing court traction. The distinctive "1 Cent" Penny emblem appears on the tongues and heels, with Nike Basketball motifs on the insoles. The shoe has remained in high demand since its original release, seeing retro revivals in 2015, 2016, and throughout 2023, including collaborations with Stussy and Social Status. The 2023 retro releases carried a retail price of $200 USD. Classic colorways have included Atlantic Blue, Baroque Brown, Panda (White/Black), Photon Dust, and Wheat Gold, each staying true to the shoe's original mid-90s aesthetic and iconic connection to NBA luminary Penny Hardaway.
