The Nike Air Max BW debuted in 1991, one year after the Air Max 90, as designer Tinker Hatfield's fourth Air Max release following the Air Max 1, Air Max Light, and Air Max 90. Its name is short for 'Big Window,' referring to the enlarged, more visible Air-Sole unit built into the heel, adapted from the Air Max 90's cushioning unit but scaled up for greater impact. The shoe paired a sharp PU midsole with a leather and synthetic upper for a streamlined silhouette, and it launched in its now-iconic black, white, and Persian Violet colorway. While Nike built it as a performance running shoe, the Air Max BW found its deepest cultural roots off the track: in mainland Europe, it became the symbolic sneaker of gabber, the hardcore techno scene born in Rotterdam in the early 1990s, before the movement spread to Germany, Italy, and Belgium. Decades later, the silhouette resurfaced in UK street style when grime artist Skepta posted an all-black Air Max BW pair on Instagram in 2016, a moment that reignited interest in the model across sneaker culture.
