About

The Nike Air Max 180 launched in 1991, designed by Tinker Hatfield and Bruce Kilgore as Nike's most dramatic showcase yet of its Air cushioning technology. Where earlier Air Max models revealed only a sliver of the Air unit, the 180 wrapped visible Air a full 180 degrees around the entire heel, giving the shoe its name. Nike used a blow-moulding process, reportedly inspired by the shape of a horseshoe, to mould a urethane outsole directly onto the Air unit for the first time, exposing the air bubble straight to the ground rather than protecting it behind a layer of rubber. Notably, the shoe was not officially marketed under the 'Air Max' name at launch, despite pioneering the exposed heel-Air concept the family is known for today. The original colorway, later referred to as 'Ultramarine,' paired a white upper with royal blue accents and a solar red heel window, though its white microsuede panels quickly earned a reputation as a cleaning nightmare. Nike backed the 1991 launch with a major marketing push, including a Super Bowl-era ad campaign and artwork by artist Ralph Steadman, cementing the 180 as one of the era's most technically bold sneaker releases.
