About
The Hoka Clifton is the shoe that took maximal cushioning mainstream. Hoka was founded in 2009 in Annecy, France, by Nicolas Mermoud and Jean-Luc Diard, two former Salomon employees, and its early shoes stood out for an oversized outsole with far more cushioning than other running shoes of the time. The first Clifton arrived in 2014 with a full length CMEVA foam midsole, a 4 mm drop, early stage Meta Rocker geometry and an upper with no seams, weighing 7.9 oz at a price of 130 US dollars. An early review called the ride smooth, found the fit on the wide side with a semi wide toe box, and summed it up as cushioned enough for recovery runs, springy enough for daily training and light enough for racing. The line has been updated most years since. The Clifton 9 sold for 145 US dollars, the Clifton One9 reissue of December 2024 brought back the 2014 Habanero and Citrus colourways on a 32 mm stack, and the Clifton 10 added an improved heel fit and a breathable jacquard upper with the American Podiatric Medical Association seal.
