About
The Air Jordan XV debuted in 1999, arriving as Michael Jordan's footwear during his final season with the Chicago Bulls following the second three-peat championship run. The design drew its visual inspiration from the North American X-15 — the rocket-powered research aircraft that set world altitude and speed records during the 1960s. The shoe's silhouette mirrored the aircraft's streamlined profile, with panels of Kevlar fiber woven into the upper as a lightweight structural reinforcement borrowed from aerospace and military materials. The Jordan XV represented a significant departure from the more conventional basketball aesthetics of earlier models in the line. Its futuristic form and technical material choices reflected Jordan Brand's ambition to push footwear into new design territory at the close of the decade. The shoe's distinctive construction made it one of the more technically unconventional releases in the Air Jordan catalogue. Tinker Hatfield, a central figure in the Air Jordan design legacy, described the XV as his least favourite in the series — a distinction that has since made the shoe a subject of enduring interest among collectors tracing the full arc of Jordan Brand history. The White Columbia Blue colorway stands as the most celebrated from the original 1999 release.
