Nike released the Air Jordan 1 to the public on April 1, 1985. The mid-cut came much later. Complex's Air Jordan 1 timeline marks a 2001 Air Jordan 1 Retro as the first time the sneaker came in a mid-cut. Between 2008 and 2013 there was the Phat Mid, with a puffy tongue and extra padding. Today's Air Jordan 1 Mid has run since 2013, and Complex calls it a modified version of the mid-2000s Retro: eight eyelets, no padded tongue. Next to the High, the Mid has a shorter collar. Your ankle gets a little more movement, and the pair usually costs less. That is why it is often the one people end up wearing day to day. Nike describes it as a mid-top edition inspired by the original AJ1 that keeps the familiar look, while choice colours and crisp leather give it its own identity. Colourways often borrow from the High. Take the 2020 'Chicago Black Toe' Mid (554724-069). It had a white leather base with red leather overlays on the toe, side panels and heel, plus black on the ankle and toe box. It listed at $110.
