In 2013, four months into rehab for a torn Achilles, Kobe Bryant posted a six-second clip of himself stepping off a 40-foot diving board at 5 a.m. No caption needed. Two years later Nike turned that clip into the first Kobe 10 colourway, a pool-blue mesh shoe called "5AM Flight." On 5 October 2026 it comes back as a Protro, and for once the retro is more interesting than the original.
The facts first, because the Kobe line has been a mess of leaks this year. Style code IQ5339-400, colourway Blue Lagoon/Black, price $200, release 5 October via Nike.com and select Nike Basketball retailers. Sneaker Bar Detroit and Sole Retriever agree on all four. It is the second Kobe 10 Protro after August's all-white "Halo."
What Protro Actually Changed This Time
Most Protros are a retro with a nicer insole. This one is a different shoe underneath. Complex's breakdown of Nike's August announcement lists the swaps: the 2015 Lunarlon midsole with its heel Zoom Air unit is gone, replaced by Cushlon 3.0 foam sitting on a full-length Zoom Strobel. The upper is a re-engineered mesh built for more breathability and flex, the forefoot has been widened with reinforcements, and the traction pattern was redrawn using Nike Sport Research Lab data while keeping the original's principles. The carbon-fibre wing on the lateral side stays. So does the hidden "Endure and Conquer" message.
That is the same cushioning recipe Nike put in the Kobe 9 and Kobe 8 Protros this year, and it is why those shoes are being played in rather than displayed. Lunarlon was always the Kobe 10's weak point; it packed out in a season. Cushlon 3.0 does not. If you have been avoiding Kobe retros because the 2015 and 2016 originals ride like wooden planks now, this is the one to try.
Visually, the Protro is faithful. Blue Lagoon mesh with a subtle ripple, black Swooshes, red hits on the tongue logo, heel and signature, and a near-translucent blue midsole with four stitches embroidered on the heel. The pool reference moves inside: there is a hidden water graphic under the tongue. Nike also confirmed Flyknit versions with ZoomX arrive in 2027, so if you want the stiffer, lighter racing-flat feel of the Elite, wait.
Price, India, and the Honest Resale Answer
The $200 tag matters for India because Nike India has not listed a Kobe 10 Protro at all. The adult Kobe Protros on Nike India this year, like the Kobe 1 Protro "81 Points," sit at ₹18,395. The Halo did not get an India launch in August. A VegNonVeg search for "Kobe" this week returns one Offcourt slide at ₹3,195 and nothing else. The India path for this pair is an import.
Run the number. At ₹96.29 to the dollar (fxfeed.io, quoted 2 October 2026), $200 is ₹19,258. Footwear under HS 6403 attracts 35% basic customs duty, a 10% social welfare surcharge on that duty, and 18% IGST on the total, which compounds to about 1.634 times the declared value. Landed, a 5AM Flight at full declared price is around ₹31,500 before courier fees. That is the cost of not having an official channel, and it is why the Kobe line is still a niche flex in India rather than a staple.
Resale: Sole Retriever shows a current market price of $239 against the $200 retail, a 20% premium on a shoe that has not released. That is a pre-release listing figure, not a sale history. The Halo was a general release that stayed buyable. Our read is the 5AM Flight sells through faster than Halo because it is the OG story colourway, but settles near retail within a month. Do not pay a premium for it. Pay customs.
Is It a Hooper's Shoe or a Shelf Shoe?
Hooper's shoe. A Kobe 10 was always a guard's low-cut, and with Cushlon 3.0 under a full-length Strobel it is finally a guard's low-cut that survives a Bangalore outdoor court. The widened forefoot helps Indian feet, which tend to run wider than the original Kobe 10's narrow last allowed. If you are between sizes, go up half; the 2015 pair was notoriously tight and nothing we have seen suggests the Protro last is dramatically roomier at the midfoot.
The shelf case is weaker. Blue Lagoon mesh scuffs and shows dirt; this is not a Mambacita-style grail with a story that outlives the shoe. The story here is a diving board at dawn, and the right way to honour it is to play in the pair until the mesh gives out. Kobe would have found a display pair embarrassing.
Styling in India: the blue is loud enough that it carries an outfit. Black shorts, black tee, let the shoe be the colour. With denim it reads like a Pegasus and loses the point. One more practical note for anyone importing: open-weave engineered mesh in a light colour shows dust and court grime faster than leather, and Blue Lagoon is a light colour. Budget for a mesh-safe cleaner the same day the box lands, not after the first outdoor session, because mesh stains set in a way suede never does.
The 5AM Flight was the first thing Kobe showed the world after the injury that should have ended him. It is fitting that the Protro is the first Kobe 10 you would actually want to play in again. Launch is 5 October at 10 a.m. ET on Nike.com. If you would rather skip the customs maths, check what Nike basketball we have landed in India this week.
