On 18 September a 20-year-old Spanish centre named Awa Fam walked onto a WNBA court for the Seattle Storm in a Nike basketball shoe that does not exist yet. Sneaker News and Sneaker Bar Detroit both ran the first look the same day: the Nike G.T. Force, a true high-top with a moulded toe cap and a thick zig-zag midsole, in a black build with metallic detailing across the toe. Nike NIL athlete Tyran Stokes posted close-ups on Instagram a few hours later.
A high-top. In 2026. When every signature shoe from the Kobe 6 Protro to the GT Cut 4 has spent five years racing toward the ankle bone. So the question is not "is this shoe nice." The question is whether Nike is right that the high-top is coming back, or whether this is a nostalgia exercise with a rookie attached.
The Case For: Force Was Never About Fashion
Nike Basketball used to sort its shoes into three families. Selecta Bisso summarises the split cleanly: Force for powerful, physical players who needed support, Flight for explosive athletes playing above the rim, Uptempo for everyone in between. The Force line started with the Air Force 1 in 1982, Bruce Kilgore's design and the first basketball shoe with Nike Air, and ran through the Air Force 180 in 1991 with its visible Air unit and strap.
The Greater Than range that replaced that logic in the 2020s has a Cut, a Hustle and a Jump. Speed, motor, bounce. It never had a shoe for the player who lives in the paint. Awa Fam is 6'4", plays centre, went third in the 2026 WNBA Draft, tied with Pau Gasol as the highest-drafted Spanish player ever, and took a bronze at this year's FIBA World Cup. She is exactly the athlete the Force category was invented for. Putting the revival on her feet rather than a guard's is the whole argument in one image.
House of Heat reports both a Mid and a High are coming, expected in 2027, with no price or tech sheet yet. Two heights at launch means Nike thinks there is a market for the tall one. They do not tool a High for a photo shoot.
The Case Against: Nobody Under 25 Wants Their Ankles Covered
Look at what actually sells in performance basketball. The Kobe line, all lows. The GT Cut 4, a low, and the shoe Victor Wembanyama, the tallest star in the league, chose to sign onto. The Ja 4, the Sabrina 3, the Book 2, the Caitlin 1. Lows and mids. The market voted a decade ago and it voted for mobility.
The G.T. Force also arrives without a face. Fam is a rookie. Stokes is a college prospect. Neither moves product the way a Wemby or a Clark does. Nike's own history says Force shoes need a personality to sell, and none of the images so far show one.
And there is the heat problem. A structured high-top with a moulded toe cap on a humid Mumbai court in April is a punishment. Indian hoopers who play outdoors already gravitate to lows for ventilation. A shoe designed for air-conditioned WNBA arenas may not travel.
What This Means If You Hoop in India
Here is the uncomfortable number. The Nike GT Cut 4, the current top of the Greater Than line, retails at $200 in the US according to SneakerFiles. At Trading Economics' 22 September rate of ₹95.65 to the dollar that is about ₹19,100. Land it yourself through customs and the 35 percent basic duty, 10 percent surcharge on that duty and 18 percent IGST compound to roughly 1.634 times value, so about ₹31,300 at your door.
Dawntown, one of the import stores Indian ballers actually use, had the GT Cut 4 "Black" listed at ₹54,197, sold out in every size, when we checked on 22 September. That is a 70 percent premium over the honest landed cost on a performance shoe with no collab and no story. A performance shoe. The kind you scuff on your first outdoor run.
The G.T. Force will follow the same path unless Nike India picks it up at launch, which it has not done for any Greater Than model so far. If a ₹19,000 shoe becomes ₹50,000 by the time it reaches Bengaluru, the debate about ankle height is academic. Indian hoopers will keep buying the Nike India general releases, which means whatever Nike and Jordan team shoes are on Flipkart that month.
Our advice if you want the G.T. Force when it lands in 2027: find someone travelling to the US or Dubai and pay them retail plus a dinner. Do not touch the import listings for six months. Performance shoes lose their resale premium faster than anything else because nobody wants a court shoe with someone else's sweat in it.
Where We Land
Honestly, the high-top is not coming back as the default. What Nike is doing is smarter than that. It is admitting that the Greater Than line has been built for guards, and that a 6'4" centre drafted third overall deserves a shoe designed for her body rather than a size-16 GT Cut. The Force revival is a segmentation move, not a fashion prediction. One shoe in five, for the one player in five who needs it.
That is the right call and it still might not sell. We would put money on the Mid outselling the High three to one, and on the High becoming a cult shoe for exactly the kind of buyer who wore Air Force 180s to school.
