About
The Puma Mostro first appeared in 1999 and takes its name from the Italian word for monster, which suits its experimental look. Designer Peter Schmidt crossed two ideas: the slim, tough sprinting spikes of the 1960s and the chilled out surfing shoes of the 1980s. The result is a low profile shoe with a mesh upper, a strap across the instep instead of laces and a rubber sole covered in small spikes that wraps up the sides of the shoe. It sold more than a million pairs in the early 2000s, counted Madonna and Bjork among its fans and turned up in a modified form in the 2005 film The Island. Puma brought it back on 13 January 2024. That was 25 years after the original, and it came as a remastered edition rather than an exact replica, pairing the original upper with the later Mostro Ur tooling, a metallic silver Formstrip and an elastic strap over a lycra liner. Puma lists the current Mostro OG with a regular fit and an OrthoLite lining under a hook and loop closure, and says it gives a snug, secure fit best suited to narrow feet.
