Kobe Bryant's first true Nike signature shoe, the Zoom Kobe I released February 10, 2006, marking his debut on-court signature line after previously wearing unbranded Nike Huarache models during his transition away from Adidas. Unlike the bulky high-tops that dominated basketball at the time, Bryant pushed Nike toward a low-cut build for greater mobility and quickness on court, a decision that would define every Kobe signature going forward. The shoe combined pebbled leather and mesh in the upper with Zoom Air cushioning in the heel and forefoot for a low-profile, responsive ride, plus Free-inspired forefoot flex grooves. Nike's own launch messaging captured the design brief directly: 'Like Kobe Bryant's game, his first signature shoe, the Zoom Kobe I speaks for itself.' The Zoom Kobe I earned lasting significance as the shoe Bryant wore on January 22, 2006, when he scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, the second-highest single-game total in NBA history. Nike revived the silhouette in 2018 as the 'Protro,' retaining the original low-cut shape while modernizing the cushioning and traction for current play, and has continued releasing Protro colorways referencing Bryant's career milestones.
