About
The Nike Air Huarache was designed by Tinker Hatfield and originally released in 1991. Its defining construction feature is a neoprene bootie inner sleeve — a soft, sock-like wrap that conforms to the foot — paired with leather overlays and a structured heel cage. Unlike traditional running shoes that relied solely on lacing for fit, the Huarache's neoprene construction provided a dynamic, adaptive lock-down without requiring laces across the full upper. The name references the traditional Huarache sandal woven by hand in Mexico, a nod to the shoe's wrap-like fit philosophy. The original colourway featured a White and Emerald upper with a Resin-coloured heel cage — a palette so distinctive that Nike has revisited it in multiple OG retro re-releases, including in 2013 and 2022, both times returning to the original White/Emerald/Resin colour-blocking. The shoe launched as a running model but crossed into lifestyle territory rapidly. Current retro iterations retail at $125, making it one of Nike's most architecturally interesting silhouettes from the early 1990s.
