About
The New Balance 1400 was originally slated to arrive in 1985 as a follow-up to the 1300, but its then-revolutionary sole construction proved too difficult to mass produce, delaying its debut until 1994. It launched as part of New Balance's 1000-series alongside the 1500 and 1600, positioned as a top-of-the-line running shoe built on the brand's ENCAP and C-CAP cushioning system and manufactured in the USA. The 1400 quickly became one of New Balance's most reliable sellers through the mid-1990s running boom, prized for its domestic manufacturing quality and running heritage. It found particular significance in Japan, where enthusiasts valued its Made in USA construction and ties to American running culture, helping spread the model's popularity internationally. Its heritage grey colorway with a bold 'N' logo became an iconic look for the silhouette. In later years the 1400 was revived under New Balance's Made in USA line with premium suede uppers and mesh paneling, and became a favorite for collaborations with retailers like J.Crew, Invincible, and BEAMS.
