About
The New Balance 998 debuted in 1993, designed by Steven Smith as part of the brand's 99X running series. It was the first New Balance sneaker to feature ABZORB cushioning, a shock-absorbing blend of Dupont Engage Isoprene rubber and proprietary foam that set a new standard for comfort in the line. The upper pairs premium pigskin suede across the majority of the shoe with breathable mesh paneling at the toe box and ankle collar, while a TPU heel fin adds structural lockdown. Its minimal, straight-lined silhouette has made it one of New Balance's most understated dad-shoe designs. The 998 anchors New Balance's Made in USA collection, reflecting the brand's continued domestic manufacturing. After time out of production, it returned in 2023 for its 30th anniversary, with a shape revised to be truer to the 1993 original. Since then the model has carried notable collaborations, including Stone Island's Raso Gommato pack and WTAPS, alongside past team-ups with Concepts and J.Crew. Offered in heritage grey and rotating seasonal colorways, the 998 remains a favorite for collectors who value quiet, versatile construction.
