About
The adidas ZX 8000 launched in 1989 as part of a trio of running silhouettes alongside the ZX 7000 and ZX 9000, with the ZX 8000 distinguished by its enhanced cushioning technology. The shoe was among the first adidas models to introduce the TORSION System — a plastic bridge placed under the arch connecting the forefoot to the heel — which allowed independent forefoot and heel movement, improved stability on uneven terrain, and contributed to a lightweight ride described at the time as revolutionary for running shoe technology. Its futuristic design stood out visually for its era. Leather versions of the ZX 8000 were introduced in 2003, and the model became closely associated with rave culture of the late 1980s and early 1990s, earning recognition as a rave-era icon. In 2008, adidas Consortium released a limited aZX reissue that honored original designers Jacques Chassaing and Markus Thaler. The silhouette has since attracted collaborations including a Parley version crafted from recycled ocean plastics and fishing nets, a Gucci SS23 collaboration featuring monogramming, and a Kawasaki Ninja-inspired edition, cementing its dual identity as both a performance heritage piece and a lifestyle sneaker.
