About
The Adidas Handball Spezial was originally released in 1979 and built for use on handball courts. Its full suede upper allows smooth mobility across indoor surfaces, while an enhanced heel cap provides ankle protection and a specialised sole delivers court-specific traction. Professional handball players wore the shoe during World Handball Championships, cementing its performance credentials. By the 1980s the Spezial had migrated from courts to the football terraces of the UK, where it became embedded in the subcultural identity of supporters in cities like Liverpool and Manchester — terrace fashion that ran parallel to, and largely separate from, mainstream sportswear. The shoe sat quietly in Adidas's archive for decades before a second wave of relevance arrived via TikTok and Instagram in the early 2020s, when celebrities and fashion influencers adopted its low-profile suede silhouette as a minimalist lifestyle shoe. In September 2023, Adidas released a vintage-inspired collaboration with Sporty & Rich, and the Handball Spezial has since sustained a continuous collaboration pipeline that shows no sign of cooling.
