The adidas Continental 80 originated in the late 1980s as an indoor tennis/training shoe, built with a soft leather upper, perforated toe box, and a rubber double cup-sole with EVA midsole, drawing visual cues from the era's minimalist court shoes. It saw little attention at launch. adidas Originals reissued it in June 2018 as a one-to-one replica under the Yung series, in colorways including Black/Scarlet/Navy, White/Scarlet/Navy, and White/Off-White/Scarlet. Its plain, low-profile look struck a contrast against the bulky dad-shoe trend dominating sneakers at the time, and its resemblance to the Yeezy Powerphase fueled early attention, though the Continental predates that design. adidas leaned into its heritage for the Spring/Summer 2019 campaign, styled with bold color-blocking and shot by photographer Campbell Addy, framing it as a symbol of democratic design. It has since become a recurring adidas Originals staple with frequent new colorways and material updates, including a premium python-leather version.
