About
The Adidas Stan Smith traces its origins to 1965, when it was introduced as the Adidas Robert Haillet — a tennis shoe endorsed by the prominent French player of the same name. The shoe was designed by Horst Dassler, son of Adidas founder Adolf Dassler. When Haillet retired, tennis manager Donald Dell suggested renaming the model after American player Stan Smith, who accepted a royalty deal; the official renaming took place in 1978. The shoe's defining design element replaces Adidas's signature three stripes with three rows of perforations punched into the white leather upper, providing ventilation. A green foam padding was added at the heel in 1967 for Achilles tendon protection, and the tongue features a sketch of Stan Smith. By 1988, approximately 22 million pairs had sold. Adidas has reported over 30 million pairs sold since 1971, making it the best-selling tennis shoe in history. Today the Stan Smith functions primarily as a lifestyle sneaker and retails at in its classic White/Green colourway. In India it is widely available through Adidas stores and platforms including Myntra, making it one of the most accessible premium white sneakers in the market.
