On 21 September Jordan Brand released the Son of Mars Low "Black Cat", style code 580603-005, at $165 in men's and women's sizes through Nike.com and Nike stores, per KicksUnderCost and Sneaker News. No hype, no raffle, no shroud. A hybrid shoe that most sneakerheads spent 2013 mocking is now quietly one of the cleanest black Jordans you can buy at retail.
I remember the first Son of Mars Lows hitting Indian grey-market Instagram pages in 2013 at absurd markups and nobody biting. The shoe was too much: Air Jordan 3 elephant print, 4 wings and netting, 5 reflective tongue, 6 heel tab, all on one low-cut chassis. Thirteen years later, painted entirely black, that same overload reads as texture rather than noise.
Where the Son of Mars Came From
The lineage runs through Spike Lee. His Mars Blackmon character from the late-1980s Nike ads shaped how a generation saw Air Jordans, and Jordan Brand has been paying that back with hybrids since the Spiz'ike in 2006. Sneaker Bar Detroit lays the family tree out: Spiz'ike first, then the Son of Mars, then the Low.
The Low's first big moment was the "Do The Right Thing" colourway. StockX's product record has it at $140 retail on 29 June 2013, Game Royal with Pimento, Tour Yellow, Cement Grey and Pine Green pulled from the film poster, 40 Acres and a Mule logo on the tongue shroud. It was loud and it was cheap for a Jordan and it did not sell like a Jordan. The Green Glow and Bel Air pairs later that year did not change that.
The reason is simple. In 2013 a hybrid Jordan was a compromise product for people who could not get the real retros. Nobody wanted to be seen in the compromise.
Why 2026 Is Different
Two things changed. First, retro Jordan prices went up and stayed up, so a $165 shoe with visible Air and full-grain leather is now the value play, not the consolation prize. Second, low-profile and hybrid silhouettes became fashionable on their own terms. When the Samba and the Gazelle can headline a season, a chunky Jordan mash-up no longer needs permission.
Jordan Brand brought the Low back on 20 March 2026 in Cement Grey/Black/Fire Red/White (580603-004) at $165, per House of Heat. SBD's 2026 roster adds Black/University Red (580603-002), White/Gym Red (580603-101) and a new Do The Right Thing (580603-433), all at $165. The "Thunder" black and yellow pair (580603-003) came through in between. Black Cat is the fifth or sixth code of the year, depending on how you count.
That cadence tells you Nike is treating this as a general-release franchise, not a nostalgia one-off. General releases are where the value is.
What the Black Cat Gets Right
Paint a hybrid one colour and you find out whether the shape works. KicksUnderCost describes the Black Cat as "visible Air units, clean paneling, and tonal overlays" in an all-black execution that emphasises the structure, and that is exactly what happens on foot. The elephant-print quarter panel borrowed from the 3 becomes a texture change rather than a colour block. The wings and mesh netting from the 4 read as a shadow. The 5-style tongue and the 6 heel tab, the two loudest parts of the original, disappear into the silhouette until the light catches them.
What you are left with is a low-cut Jordan with more going on than an Air Jordan 1 Low and less shouting than an Air Jordan 4. That is a gap in the Jordan range that no single retro fills, and the hybrid fills it by accident. Thirteen years ago the colourways were the problem, not the shoe. The Black Cat removes the colourways.
The India Angle Is the Whole Story
Here is what makes this shoe unusual for Indian buyers. It is a Nike general release, and Nike India carries general releases. Mainstreet Marketplace has the Thunder colourway (580603-003) listed new at ₹17,999 MRP, marked down to ₹16,899, in UK 6.5 to 13, shipping in 28 days.
Now compare. At Trading Economics' 22 September rate of ₹95.65 to the dollar, the $165 US retail is about ₹15,800. Import that pair yourself and the 35 percent basic duty, the 10 percent surcharge on that duty and 18 percent IGST compound to roughly 1.634 times declared value, landing it near ₹25,800. The Indian retail price of ₹17,999 is ₹7,800 cheaper than importing. For once the Indian MRP is the deal.
The Black Cat itself has not shown up on Indian shelves yet. Given the Thunder pair is already listed here, expect it within weeks at the same ₹17,999. Do not pay a reseller ₹25,000 for a shoe that will be on the Nike India app for ₹18,000.
Sizing from experience with the Cement pair: the Son of Mars Low runs slightly big through the midfoot because the chassis is built for a mid-cut collar it does not have. Go half a size down from your Air Jordan 4 size if you are between sizes. The leather is thick and takes a fortnight to give.
Verdict: Best Black Jordan Under ₹20,000
Honestly, the Black Cat Son of Mars Low is a better daily beater than the Air Jordan 4 "Black Cat" ever was, and it costs a third as much in India. The elephant print hides scuffs, the all-black hides Delhi dust, and the visible heel Air is real cushioning, not a design flourish. It is not a shelf piece and it does not pretend to be one. Buy it, wear it into the ground, and buy another when the Nike India price is still ₹17,999 next year.
Styling is easy because the shoe does all the work. Black cargos or raw indigo, a plain heavyweight tee, nothing else. The one thing to avoid is black-on-black-on-black head to toe, which turns a textured shoe into a blob. Give it a light trouser.
