Syn Zhuang Won the Jordan Design Studio. Here Is What Her Folding Air Jordan 1 Means

Eight designers in eight cities rebuilt the Air Jordan 1. A Beijing freelancer won with a suede collar that folds over the laces and flips the Swoosh. India was not on the map, and that is the part worth talking about.

Eight designers, eight cities, one Air Jordan 1 each. On 31 August 2026, at Jordan Brand's "The One" finals weekend in Shanghai, a freelance footwear designer from Beijing named Syn Zhuang was told hers was the one going forward. Hypebeast broke the result the next morning. Her shoe has a suede collar that folds up over the laces and hides the toe box, and a Swoosh that reads backwards until you fold it back down.

India was not on the list of cities. It was not on the list of qualifiers for the tournament either. That absence is the most interesting part of this story for anyone reading from Mumbai or Delhi, and we will get to it. First, the shoe.

What the Jordan Design Studio Actually Was

The programme launched in summer 2026, according to House of Heat's rundown of the city winners, as three-day workshops run in Beijing, Chicago, Los Angeles, Mexico City, New York, Seoul, Shanghai and Tokyo. Each city had local mentors. The brief was to reinterpret the Air Jordan 1 "Love Letter" through identity, heritage, ambition and personal experience. Sneaker Bar Detroit names the marquee mentors across the programme: Nina Chanel Abney, Chris Gibbs, Angelo Baque and Hiroshi Fujiwara. That is a serious room coaching people who have never had a shoe produced.

The eight city winners, per Sneaker Bar Detroit's gallery: Alaia Ryan of New York with layered Swooshes and a NAYR Air patch; Chelsea B of Chicago with crochet across the upper; Cheikh Tall of Los Angeles with plaid pulled from Ghanaian market bags, handles included; Carlos "Calo" Lopez Velasco of Mexico City with oversized stacked leather and canvas panels; Yuji Wada of Tokyo with wrinkled black textures and a dotted Swoosh outline; Jisoon Kim of Seoul with a tall boot built from repeated AJ1 panels; GG Wu of Shanghai with distressed finishes and removable pieces that switch the shoe between Mid and Low; and Zhuang of Beijing.

The finals ran on 29 August in Shanghai alongside the 1-on-1 tournament, per Nike's own "The One" page, and the winner was named two days later.

Why Zhuang's Shoe Won

Look at the other seven and you see additions. More material, more panels, more height. Zhuang subtracted. Hypebeast describes a transformable suede collar that, folded up, partially conceals the toe box and lacing and shows a reversed Swoosh; folded down, the Swoosh sits the normal way. The toe box is rounder and softer than the original. The heel curve and the sole unit are untouched. Sneakers Cartel adds a perforated lateral Swoosh panel. Everything that makes an AJ1 read as an AJ1 from ten feet away is still there.

Her own explanation, quoted by Hypebeast, is the sharpest sentence anyone has said about the Jordan 1 in years: "A classic doesn't have to be one fixed form. It can exist in different ways, to reach different people." She designed it for women who wear the shoe every day, noting that the original was "born on the court, designed with a male wearer in mind," and that the way people actually wear it now has nothing to do with that. House of Heat reports Jordan Brand chose it for its "distinct, rebellious design" and that it now advances to production development for a future inline release. No date. No price. Jordan Brand is clear that everything shown remains a prototype.

Our take: this is the right winner. GG Wu's convertible Mid/Low was the cleverest engineering in the room, and Cheikh Tall's Ghanaian plaid was the best story. But Zhuang's is the only one of the eight you could actually manufacture at Air Jordan 1 volume and sell to someone who has never heard of Jordan Design Studio. That is what Jordan Brand was buying.

Where India Sits in All This

Nike's "The One" page lists qualifiers in Madrid, Ljubljana, Belgrade, Paris and London for Europe; Tokyo, Nagoya, Cebu, Manila, Guangzhou, Dongguan, Hangzhou, Chengdu, Xian, Shanghai, Taipei, Beijing and Wuhan for Asia; Chicago, New York and Los Angeles for North America. Thirteen Asian cities. Zero Indian ones. The design programme followed the same map.

That stings, because the raw material is here. Delhi has the Superkicks flagship we covered in July. Mumbai's streetwear designers have been cutting up Jordan 1s for Instagram for years. The customisation scene on r/SneakersIndia is real and it is unpaid. Jordan Brand ran a global design competition looking for exactly the sensibility Zhuang showed, everyday wear filtered through local culture, and skipped the most populous country on earth to do it. Cebu made the list. Bengaluru did not.

There is a reason, and it is commercial. Jordan Brand goes where it has tournament infrastructure and retail depth, and India's Jordan retail still routes through Nike's authorised partner network, VegNonVeg included, rather than a Jordan-run flagship. When that changes, the workshops will follow. Until then, the way an Indian designer gets into a programme like this is by being in Tokyo or Shanghai when it happens.

For buyers, the takeaway is simpler. Zhuang's shoe is a women-first Air Jordan 1 with a rounder toe and a softer collar. When it hits production, expect it in women's sizing first, which in India means smaller runs and men hunting the largest women's sizes, the same way they did for the women's Air Jordan 1 "Nails & Grails" that dropped on 2 September.

Will It Actually Release, and Should You Wait?

The inaugural winner of a programme like this almost always ships, because the brand needs the story to have an ending. But House of Heat's wording is "production development," not "release date," so this is a 2027 shoe at the earliest. There is no StockX listing, no style code and no resale market, and there will not be one for months. Anyone selling you a "Jordan Design Studio sample" on Instagram this week is selling you a photograph.

What you can do now is buy the shoe Zhuang started from. The Air Jordan 1 "Love Letter" was the base for every one of the eight prototypes, and the regular Air Jordan 1 High OG is the reference point her folding collar is arguing with. Wear it, live in it for a year, and you will understand exactly what she changed and why.

Eight designers rebuilt the Air Jordan 1 and the one that won took things away rather than adding them. That is a lesson for every custom shop in Delhi and Mumbai, and a signal for what Jordan Brand thinks the next decade of the shoe looks like.
