Teddy Santis Just Took Aimé Leon Dore Into a Real Running Race

Every ALD x New Balance drop before this one was a lifestyle shoe wearing a performance shoe's clothes. The FuelCell SC Elite v5 and Rebel v5, out August 14, are the first time the collaboration actually has to perform.

Every previous Aimé Leon Dore x New Balance release has been a lifestyle shoe first and a running shoe in name only — the 990, the 1300, the archival stuff that looks incredible on a coffee run and has never once been laced up for an actual tempo session. That changes on August 14. The FuelCell SC Elite v5 and FuelCell Rebel v5 are New Balance's real performance running architecture, dressed in ALD's floral branding, and for the first time this partnership has to work as hard as it looks.

The SC Elite v5 retails at $270 in Nordic Green/Black with orange accents, built as New Balance's top-tier carbon-plated racer under style code MRCEL3HX. The Rebel v5 comes in at $150 in Atlantic Blue/Black with Alkaline Green accents, positioned as the lighter everyday trainer of the pair under style code MFCXB1ND. Both details are confirmed independently by Sole Retriever and Sneaker Bar Detroit, right down to the style codes, which is the level of agreement that turns a rumour into a fact worth reporting.

Why This Is Not Just Another Logo Swap

Teddy Santis did not stumble into this credibility. He has been leading New Balance's Made in USA line for years now, which means he has spent that time inside the actual product process rather than approving colourways from a distance. Sole Retriever's coverage puts it plainly: Santis "always looks out for his first love" in these collaborations, and putting his floral branding on a genuine carbon racer rather than another retro runner is the clearest signal yet that he wanted this pack judged as running gear, not merchandise.

That distinction matters more than it sounds. Plenty of fashion-first collaborations have slapped their branding on a performance silhouette and called it innovation, and serious runners can tell within one session whether the shoe underneath the branding actually holds up. New Balance is not risking its FuelCell reputation on a shoe that cannot perform, which tells you this was built by the performance team first and skinned by ALD second — the right order for a shoe that has to survive a marathon, not just a lookbook.

Contrast this with how most streetwear-meets-sportswear collaborations actually work. Usually the fashion partner gets final say on a shoe that was never meant to be raced in, and the "performance" label is really just marketing language borrowed from a category the brand has no intention of competing in. The FuelCell line is New Balance betting its actual racing reputation, built over years against Nike's Vaporfly and Alphafly, on a shoe wearing someone else's floral branding. That is a real risk for New Balance to take, not just for ALD.

Pricing, and Why India Barely Factors In

Both shoes are US-exclusive through newbalance.com with no indication of an India retail listing, which is typical for ALD collaborations — they have never had a direct India channel, and buyers here have always gone through resale platforms for the 990 and 1300 releases too. At today's rate of ₹95.46 to the dollar, the $270 SC Elite v5 converts to roughly ₹25,770 before duty. Apply India's import stack on footwear — 35% basic customs duty, a social welfare surcharge on that duty, then 18% IGST on the combined total, compounding to about 1.634 times the declared value — and a personal import lands close to ₹42,100. That is genuinely elite-tier running shoe money, in the range of a Nike Alphafly rather than a typical lifestyle sneaker.

India's own running boom makes this a strange miss. We covered the scale of it in our marathon boom piece — more Indians are training seriously than at any point in the last decade, and a shoe like this would land well with the exact Bangalore and Mumbai crowd already running weekend half-marathons in imported super shoes. New Balance is leaving that demand entirely to resale platforms instead of building an official channel for it.

That gap is not unique to New Balance. Almost every carbon-plated racer worth owning still requires an Indian runner to either import it directly or buy through a marketplace, because none of the major performance brands treat India as a super-shoe market yet despite the country producing more sub-elite marathoners every year. Until that changes, expect every serious racing shoe story we cover to end with the same import-math paragraph you just read.

Our Take — Buy the Rebel, Skip the Elite Unless You Race

The Rebel v5 is the smarter buy for almost everyone reading this. At $150 before duty, it is a genuinely versatile everyday trainer with real ALD design language, and you do not need a carbon plate to justify owning it. The SC Elite v5 is a specialist tool — buy it only if you are actually racing competitively, because ₹42,000 landed is wasted money on a carbon racer that spends its life on easy runs instead of race day.

Worth a mention too: Sole Retriever's listing for this drop also includes a third shoe, the Gator Run in an Angora colourway under style code UGTR4DY at $130, a lower-key lifestyle runner that sits closer to ALD's earlier New Balance work than either FuelCell model. If the price ladder on the two performance shoes puts you off entirely, the Gator Run is the version of this drop built for people who just want the aesthetic without training in it.

Style-wise, both shoes lean toward a cleaner, less logo-heavy running aesthetic than most performance shoes on the market, which fits neatly with the same quiet-luxury sensibility we discussed in our Puma Speedcat piece on 2026's low-key sneaker mood. If you want to see what New Balance already sells through official India channels without the import headache, our New Balance range is the easier starting point.
