About
The Puma Clyde was introduced in 1973, named after New York Knicks guard Walt Clyde Frazier. After Frazier refused to wear the existing Puma Basket, Puma signed him on three conditions: suede construction, his Clyde signature on every pair, and a new colourway for each NBA game he played. Frazier is documented to have worn 390 different colourways throughout his career. The Clyde is a modified Puma Suede with a narrower fit, a more pointed toe box, and an improved durable sole. In 2018, Frazier signed a lifetime deal with Puma, leading to the model's renewed production. The shoe's 50th anniversary in 2023 was commemorated through a collaboration with END Clothing, limited to 300 numbered pairs in three colourways using premium hairy suede fabrics, retailing at . The Puma Clyde represents one of the earliest and most significant athlete-signature shoe deals in sports history, predating the modern signature sneaker industry by over a decade.
