About
The Converse Weapon arrived on NBA courts in 1986 as Converse's most advanced basketball shoe, a full leather high top with padding at the heel and ankle and a plain, no frills midsole. Its first endorsers were Larry Bird and Magic Johnson, and the Choose Your Weapon campaign put the two rivals side by side in colourways that matched their teams. Bird won his third straight MVP in 1986 and Johnson his first in 1987, and Converse soon had Isiah Thomas, Kevin McHale, Mark Aguirre and Bernard King in the shoe as well. The Weapon came back in 1999 and 2014, returned in a CX version with a foam midsole in September 2021 at 120 US dollars, and was rebuilt for a retro that debuted in May 2023 after two years of development, with a Fragment Design collaboration leading the way. In 2024, 38 years after the debut, Converse made it the centrepiece of its All Star Weekend with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander as its new face and reissued the original Vintage White and Black and Natural Ivory colourways at 120 US dollars. The low cut Weapon Ox became widely available for the first time that same year.
